Biking / Camp Trip

Online registration is open until Sept 24 for the 224B  two day / two night mountain bike trip in Santa Cruz on October 12 – 14. (Monday October 14 is a teacher work-day at both Stanley and Acalanes.) This trip is for bikers of all skill levels.  Riders will need a working mountain bike with knobby tires and bike clothing including gloves and helmet.

We will depart from the hut Saturday morning and drive to Wilder Ranch State Park where the troop will bike as a group on easy/intermediate trails for several hours. Then we will drive to New Brighton State Beach Campground where we will stay both Saturday and Sunday nights.  On Sunday morning we will drive back to Wilder Ranch and break into two groups so less-advanced riders can bike easy/intermediate trails and advanced riders can bike advanced technical trails.

Each Scout should eat a hearty breakfast on Saturday morning and bring his own water, lunch, and snacks for Saturday. Riders will need a small backpack to carry lunch, water and any riding accessories.  Riders will make a lunch for Sunday’s ride on Sunday morning before we leave New Brighton Campground.  Each patrol is responsible for food and preparation for dinner on Saturday and Sunday, breakfast on Sunday and Monday and a bag lunch on Sunday.

We will depart from the hut on Saturday morning at 7:30 AM.  Arrive at the hut wearing your biking clothes. You will need to pack your camping clothes, class B uniform, hat, sunglasses, sunscreen, and sweatshirt, sleeping bag, sleeping pad, mess kit, and 10 essentials. We will be car camping so you don’t need to pack too light.  Cars can park at the campground and there are showers in the bathroom next to our camp sites.  Also bring scout handbooks as there will be opportunity for advancement activities at camp.

The troop will return to Lafayette at about 11:00 AM on Monday October 14. However, if scouts and parents are attending the trip together, they may choose to stay in Santa Cruz on Monday and ride on their own at Wilder Ranch or spend time at New Brighton Campground.   New Brighton Campground is a state beach with beautiful amenities and Wilder Ranch has more than 35 miles of amazing single and double track biking trails. See the links to both parks for additional details.

Adults who plan to attend, please indicate how many Scouts you can take including your son and how many bikes for scouts you can take. If you have 5 seatbelts, and you are willing to drive 4 Scouts then comment “can drive 4 Scouts to and from”.  If you can bring 2 bikes including your own, then comment “can bring 1 bike for scouts”.
