BackPacking Trip

Backpacking Trip to Pt. Reyes on Sept 21-22

Online registration for the overnight Backpacking Trip to Pt. Reyes is open until September 8th. Scouts registered for Philmont in June 2020 including those on the waiting list are expected to attend to gain some experience. However, the trip is open to all Scouts regardless of age or experience. You just need boots, a backpack, and a can-do attitude. There are loaner backpacks in the hut if you need one. The troop will also provide tents, jet-boil stoves, and fuel. The campsite has water, tables, and toilet.

The cost of the campsite is paid by the troop. The cost for Saturday dinner and Sunday breakfast is $20 payable to the troop at time of registration. The troop will purchase food for Saturday dinner and Sunday breakfast. Each Scout should eat a hearty breakfast on Saturday morning and bring your own water, lunch, and snacks for Saturday. For example, Cliff bars, PB&J, apple, nuts, cookies (think small package with high calories and only carry what you will eat).

The troop will leave the hut at 7:00am on Saturday September 21st and return to Lafayette at about 2:00pm on Sunday September 22nd. Scouts will need to pack as light as possible. Arrive at the hut wearing your Class B, shorts, boots, hat, sunglasses, sunscreen, and sweatshirt. Pack your sleeping bag, sleeping pad, mess kit, and 10 essentials. Those going to Philmont should also pack items on the attached list so you can get used to the weight and volume even though you probably won’t need most of these items at Pt. Reyes.

Be prepared to hike about 7 miles while carrying 35-50 pounds including food and patrol gear that will be distributed at the Bear Valley Visitor Center trailhead where we will rendezvous.
