Friends of Scouting

 

It is that time of year, and we are kicking off the annual Friends of Scouting fundraising

campaign for the Mt. Diablo Silverado Council. I'm sure you'll agree that Scouting makes a difference in our community and in the lives of our sons and daughters who participate in the program.  The council needs our financial support to provide for over 14,000 youth who participate in Scouting in this area. The council supports us by providing leader training, maintenance for camps and facilities, liability and accident insurance coverage, and administrative and staffing services. Please note, the money donated from our troop stays in the Mt. Diablo Silverado Council.

The suggested contribution is $250 per Scout, however, any contribution is welcome and we recognize that families contribute in many different ways to our troop - financially and otherwise.  If you are able to make a contribution, please make your check payable to Boy Scouts of America-Friends of Scouting. The council also takes Mastercard and Visa and offers an installment plan for your contribution ($250 over 8 months is only $31.25 per month!) and you can pay the full amount or installment plan online.   

If your employer offers corporate matching on donations, then your contribution can be doubled!  

Options to donate are online or sending a check directly to me at my address or bringing a check to the next 3/6 parents meeting. My address is 1199 Monticello Rd, Lafayette, CA 94549.  I am required to report back to the council for each family who is a member of our troop, so even if you choose to not make a contribution, please let me know (otherwise eventually the council will contact you).  All contributions are confidential and tax deductible. You will receive a letter from the council acknowledging your contribution to be used for tax purposes.

Troop 224 has a great reputation with the council for both generosity and quick response.  Let's try to continue that trend!

2019 Ski Trip

Are you ready for the mountains with your skis and snowboards? It’s time to sign up for the Troop 224 annual ski trip! 
 
The dates of the ski trip are March 23-24, 2019. Hopefully we will get a repeat of the March Madness snow that came to Tahoe last season! Each year we head up to Tahoe for a weekend of skiing/snowboarding fun – it is one of our most fun trips on the Troop 224 calendar so sign up now! This year, once again, we are staying at Granlibakken Lodge in Tahoe City and skiing at Alpine Meadows on Saturday and Sugar Bowl on Sunday. Please find below some important logistics:
 
Snow Sports Merit Badge
This year, you can complete your Snow Sports merit badge on the Ski Trip! 
 
In order to complete your Snow Sports merit badge on the Ski Trip, you should finish pre-requisites #1, 2, 3, 4 and 6 before the ski trip – see attached Snow Sports MB workbook for your reference. One of the Alpine Meadows Ski Patrollers will be joining us after skiing on Saturday March 23rd to help us through the merit badge requirements. Requirements #5 and 7 - which are the practical ski/snowboarding parts of the Merit Badge - will be completed on Saturday morning at Alpine Meadows.

Accommodation

We are staying at Granlibakken Lodge, arriving Friday night and departing Sunday morning. The cost for lodging based on dorm style bunk bed sleeping arrangements is $106 per person per night. The price includes two morning breakfast buffets.

Adults may elect to make their own arrangements with Granlibakken or other hotels should dorm style sleeping arrangements not work.

Meals
Dinner Friday night is decided by individual carpool. There are fast food options in Auburn and Colfax.
Lunches - participants can bring brown bag lunches for both days, however fast food options are also available at both ski resorts.
Saturday night - we will have use of the Granlibakken ski hut. As we did last year, we are excited to welcome back Local Chef Productions who will be cooking a delicious buffet dinner for us at the ski hut. Cost will be approximately $20 per person.
 
Ski Lift Pricing
Adult (19-64 years) - $88 per day
Youth Adult (13-19 years) - $72 per day
Child (5-12 years) - $54 per day
Senior (64+) - $74 per day
 
Above pricing is for lift tickets only. Does not include ski equipment or lessons. If renting equipment, rental gear should be obtained prior to the trip (try Sports Basement for an affordable option). Scouts are required to wear helmets. There will be no lessons arranged through the Troop 224 Group Booking - all lessons should be arranged by yourself directly with Alpine Meadows and Sugar Bowl
 
Travel
Please make your own travel plans to/from Tahoe. If you are a scout, please bring $20 for your driver to offset gas/vehicle expenses.
 
In order to reserve your spot, please sign up on the attached Google docs no later than Thursday, January 31st and make payment to PayPal by carefully following the directions on the Troop 224 website. Be sure to include on the Google doc the age category of the participants so we can purchase the appropriate tickets as well as lodging requirements and if you intend to complete the Snow Sports Merit Badge. Payment must be received no later than by Friday, February 15th.

Arizona Trip - Spring Break

Are you ready….for the Arizona Trip!

We leave Saturday March 30 and return Saturday April 6th! ( Spring Break)

We have booked the most amazing camp sites in astounding National Parks!

2019 Summer Camp

Payment for Catalina Island ( Camp Emerald Bay) is now due.  The payment deadline is 3/1/2019.  Registration closes on 3/1/19 except for incoming 5th graders.  

All reservations have been made and  payment covers, Summer Camp, Plane flights, Shuttles, Ferries and the battleship. Please make your check out to “Friends of Troop 224”  and send to our treasurer, Karen Wang, 321 Beacon Ridge Lane Walnut Creek CA 94597.  Please note, if you use PAYPAL please follow the instructions below exactly.  It will cost each participant approx.. $40 more in paypal fees if the below instructions are not followed correctly.  This year’s summer camp is the “big summer camp trip” and is more expensive than the local camps. 

Every other year we do a less expensive local summer camp trip.  This is the best summer camp location I have ever found! Preliminary head count shows 18 scouts and 8 adults interested thus far.

There has been a change this year.  Because there are no airlines who can get us to the Ferry terminal on time, we will be flying on Jet Blue into Long Beach on Saturday July 20, 2019 instead of Sunday July 21, 2019.   Please note the change.   We will stay on board the Battleship U.S.S. Iowa on Saturday night with dinner, breakfast and tour included. $75pp  The battleship is right next to the departure dock for our 8:00A.M. departure to Catalina Island.

Summer camp on Catalina Island sailing, boating, Kayaking, scuba diving and snorkeling, lots of hiking and biking and a fast track program to becoming a First Class Scout.  An event not to miss!

  • - Jet Blue Airlines round trip from Oakland to Long Beach Airport.
  • - Depart to camp – parents meet at the Oakland airport at 9:00 AM on Saturday July 20, 2019.  Departure flight # 147 at 11:40AM ,   Super shuttle to USS Iowa on Saturday and catch Ferry at 8:00AM  on Sunday 7/21/19.
  • - Return from camp – Saturday July 27, 2019.  Return flight #348 arrives at Oakland Airport at 5:43PM, parents pick scouts up at airport at 5:43PM, end of trip.

PAYPAL instructions

1) Log into your Pay Pal account

2) Under the Pay Pal logo at the top of the page, select the "send & request" tab

3) Select "send money to friends and family".  Do not select “paying for an item or service” as it charges a fee to the troop. This is the mistake families are making.

4) In the box marked "to", enter the email address:

5) Enter the dollar amount

6) Select method of payment under "You're paying with" drop down box.  If a direct transfer from a bank account, there will be no fee.  If you want to pay with a linked credit card, the fee will show up as an addition to the amount you are sending. 

6) Add a note to tell the treasurer what the payment is for

7) Click send money and you are all done!

Alaska Trip - Important Information

Trip Proposed Date; 6/9/2019-6/19/2019

I have attached proposed itinerary as well as trip guideline from Midnight sun council. 

Proposed itinerary plan: 

Depart: SFO/OAK to Fairbanks 6/9/2019 (Depend on time and flight fee)

Return : Anchorage to OAK/SFO  6/19/2019

Flight will likely layover in Seattle.   However, if we have layover in Canada,  You all will need to have a passport ready.

 Who qualifies for this trip;

  Troop 224 handbook Pg 48:  junior in high school with life scout rank at the time of trip. 

Participation Fees; Full payment due at the sign up for scouts with no refund if anyone drop out(unless you find replacement). First 18 people (first come first serve basis), after first 18, you will be on standby. If we have too many interested party, priority will be given to scouts. 4 ULs are required to go to make this trip possible.

Adult interested in the party; Please send me email and let me know. I will ask upfront payment as soon as I sort out the numbers of scouts who is interested in going. 

Northern lights council will charge by block of participant instead of per person so we would like to take advantage of the best deal by making full crew instead of missing one or two spots which participants end up paying more.

Sign up dealine; 5/31/2018

Below fee include full excursion and flight.

Adult: $3500

Scout: $1500

Leading ULs; This will cover 4ULs and 1 Backup UL basic fees for the trip. This means if excursion fee comes out more than planned, each UL will pay for that price to give the most benefits to participating senior scouts. Excursion may change depend on accessibility and availability. The excursion fee is not final until April 2019 per Alaskan Council. ULs' non refundable deposit at the time sign up: $200

### Midnight council trip is based on 7days. Our troop trip is 10 days!

Philmont 2020

 Exact summer 2020 dates to be determined

Philmont Scout Ranch is the ultimate playground for Scouts with over 180,000 square miles of remote back country in New Mexico. Those who complete their trek through the southern Rocky Mountains with their crew will gain new confidence by following in the footsteps of over 1,000,000 Scouts since the 1930’s.
